    Hooters Hotel & Casino Debuts
The renovations are complete and the tight t-shirts have been donned. Yes, Super Bowl weekend saw the debut of the new
Hooters Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

The project took the dumpy San Remo Hotel, located just off The Strip behind The Tropicana, and turned it into a glorified version of the Hooters chain of restaurants, including a sleek and modern "Florida Casual" design (with lots of trademark orange), several new restaurants, revamped rooms, and of course the famed Hooters girls. The $130 million renovation started last year and will finish up when a new beach club style pool area and bar opens in a couple of months.

I’ll be bringing you a full review of the Hooters hotel in an upcoming column.

    Project CityCenter Gets Bigger
It was already the biggest construction project ever planned for The Strip and one of the biggest ever in the United States but now
Project CityCenter, the new city-within-a-city planned by MGM Mirage, is getting even bigger. The company announced last week that they were adding over 1,000 more condominium/hotel and traditional condo units, bringing the total number to 2,800. Combine that with the 4,000 hotel rooms slated for the project and you can see why the bill for the whole thing has now gone up from $4 billion when originally announced to a heart-stopping $6 billion now. Construction is scheduled to begin in April of this year and the facility, which will include a casino, entertainment venues, shopping, and more, is scheduled to open in phases throughout 2009 and 2010.

    Mayor Wins Super Bowl Bet
The ever colorful Mayor Oscar Goodman of Las Vegas must have been thrilled when the Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl this weekend. Not because he was a big fan of the team but because of the big wager he had placed on the game. No, it wasn’t about money, it was about dressing up like Britney Spears.

That’s right the honorable Mayor Oscar Goodman will not have to stand on a street corner for an hour dressed like the pop starlet while singing her songs.

It’s all part of an annual bet between the mayor and local morning radio hosts Mark and Mercedes. A couple of years ago he backed the wrong team and wound up standing on a street corner as the construction worker from the Village People while singing “YMCA” and “Macho Man.”

Papa Was a Rolling Stone (Casino)
In what may be another coup for Las Vegas (or a sign of the impending apocalypse depending on your point of view), rumors are swirling that there may be a new rock and roll themed casino carrying The Rolling Stone moniker on its way to the city. The venerable music magazine’s founder Jann Wenner was reportedly in Vegas recently scouting sites and trying to set up a deal, with the focus being on the Alexis Park hotel on Harmon Avenue… you know, right across the street from the rock and roll themed
    Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.

The owners of the Alexis Park deny that a sale is in the works but the stories that appeared in various news outlets insist that Wenner is floating a $500 million project that would fit in nicely along the up and coming Harmon Avenue corridor. In addition to The Hard Rock (and its billion dollar expansion now underway), several hip and happening projects are in the works including the George Clooney and Rande Gerber Las Ramblas resort, the W Hotel, and the upcoming transformation of The Aladdin into Planet Hollywood.

    Vegas Airport Sets Record
Despite all of the noise and furor over how expensive Las Vegas has gotten and theories that the rising costs will keep people away, it seems that there isn’t much to worry about yet if the recent report about visitor volume at
McCarran International Airport is any indication. In 2005 more than 44 million people passed through the airport, up nearly 7% from 2004 and a whopping 22% over 2003. That number sets a new record for the facility. To keep pace with the non-stop growth, McCarran is undergoing a $2.4 billion renovation campaign, designed to ease some of the congestion that comes at peak times. New baggage screening devices are coming as are revised and revamped security check-in areas. Arriving passengers will be able to check in their luggage at the airport and have it transferred to the hotels where they are staying (starting with The Venetian in a few months and adding more hotels throughout the year). There’s also a new consolidated rental car facility under construction that will hopefully ease some of the traffic coming in and out of the airport.

    American Idol Goes Vegas
Two of the stars of the monster hit “American Idol” are working on separate plans to conquer Las Vegas, according to recent announcements.

Judge Simon Cowell (who I refer to as Snarky the Wonder-Brit) has reportedly struck a deal to create (but not appear on) a new talent competition designed to find the next Las Vegas headliner. The television show will appear on NBC this summer and will not limit itself to just singers. Look for magicians, comedians, dancers, and more to compete in front of a panel of Vegas-centric celebrity judges for that elusive shot at Sin City stardom. There is no word yet on where the potential winner will appear but there should be no lack of hotel/casinos lining up for this kind of free publicity.

Meanwhile, fellow judge Paula Abdul has signed on to be a consultant for several new entertainment venues planned for the Silverton Hotel & Casino. According to the press release, Abdul is helping to design a new 1,800 seat concert venue that will double as a nightclub, an outdoor beach area with three stages that could host up to 4,000 people, and a new nightclub planned for the top floor of a proposed 27-story tower. All of this is scheduled to be built over the next two years.

    Feature of the Week

Vegas4Visitors Makeover: Website Gets Updated Design, New Features
    New!

Vegas4Visitors.com has gotten a makeover for 2006! With a streamlined design, new features, and updated reviews combined with all of the great opinion and information readers have come to know and trust, the new version of the site aims to make your Las Vegas vacation travel planning even easier.

The Hotel section, long the most popular and heavily trafficked area of the site, have been overhauled and now feature multiple photos (where available) so you can get a visual idea of what you’re getting yourself into; a section for Related Reviews that will allow you to link to other pages on our site about restaurants, shows, attractions, and more at each individual hotel; and a “blog” where we’ll be posting any critical updates or news about the hotel. The ratings and reviews have all been updated too, helping to ensure you have the most up to date information when you’re considering where you’re going to stay.

In fact the reviews have been updated across the entire site from Shows to Nightlife to Shopping and beyond. Both the Dining and Attractions sections have gotten a new feature called “The Low Down,” which encapsulates the full reviews in a few short sentences so you can get a quick idea of what it is and whether or not it’s worth the cost.

A new feature is a support area for my new guidebook, Moon Handbooks Las Vegas. That’s where you’ll be able to read exclusive excerpts, ask me questions, and (of course buy the book). But one of the most exciting features of this section is the Updates page.

One of the unavoidable pitfalls of publishing a guidebook is that once the thing leaves the printing press and gets in your hot little hands, it's next to impossible to update when something changes. I guess I could come to each one of your homes with a red marker and change things in each and every copy but that would be inefficient and you'd have to invite me to stay for dinner.

So to set Moon Handbooks Las Vegas apart from the rest of the guidebooks out there, I have created this section on the website for major updates. In a town like Las Vegas, where it seems something is closing, opening, being remodeled, or being renamed just about every week, knowing what is different from when I wrote the book to the time when you are reading it is crucial.

The Vegas4Visitors.com Museum has been completely redone with new exhibits of Las Vegas memorabilia, updated descriptions, and more.

Over in the Weekly Column section, there are several new features including an archive going back several years of past editions, a Features Archive where you can read some of the most interesting articles that have appeared over the years, and a Q&A Archive that contains some of the most frequently asked and/or most interesting questions I’ve received over the years from readers like you. Of course the Q&A form is still available so you can ask me a question yourself.

All of us at Vegas4Visitors.com deeply appreciate the people who take the time to visit our site and are thrilled when we hear that the advice helped guide them toward a terrific Vegas vacation. We hope the new site will continue to provide the kind of expertise and knowledge our readers have come to expect.

    Question of the Week

From: Lorna in Kansas City, Kansas

Question: Why should I buy your book when I can get all of the same information for free on your website?

    Answer: Excellent question, Lorna.

The first thing to note is that my new guidebook, Moon Handbooks Las Vegas, and my website, Vegas4Visitors.com, do not have all of the same information. There are many reviews in the Moon book that do not appear on the site and vice versa, which I did intentionally to help distinguish the two products.

However, the most important difference is the mission behind them and the way that is executed. Vegas4Visitors.com is primarily about in-depth reviews of hotels, shows, dining, and attractions with information on shopping, nightlife, recreation, and more. But it isn’t, necessarily about the ins and outs of planning a Las Vegas vacation. That’s where the book comes in.

In the Moon Handbooks Las Vegas you’ll find information on when to go, what to take, and how long to stay. There are several travel strategies for people on a budget, families, repeat visitors, and more that will help people with special interests think about Vegas in the way that will be most helpful to them. There are walking tours, maps, a glossary of Las Vegas terms, health and safety information, and more all designed to give you the knowledge to plan a successful vacation.

There’s also tons of information about Las Vegas history, the people, the geography and climate, the flora and fauna, the culture, and much more that may give you a deeper understanding about the place you are considering visiting and may give you a new perspective beyond the flashing neon lights.

You’ll also find extensive sections about areas outside of the Las Vegas Strip including hotels, casinos, attractions, restaurants, recreation, and shows in Henderson, Lake Las Vegas, Summerlin, North Las Vegas, and more.

And if all of that isn’t enough to convince you, consider this: it’s much easier to carry the book around with you on The Strip than it will be to find a wireless Internet connection for your laptop.
