    Jersey Heads to Vegas
As had been rumored, “Jersey Boys,” the Tony-Award winning musical will be opening in early 2008 at the upcoming
Palazzo hotel and casino in Las Vegas, currently under construction just north of The Venetian. The show tells the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons through their music and has been a huge hit both commercially and critically on Broadway, wracking up multiple award nominations, four Tonys including Best Musical, and packed audiences.

There is no word yet on whether the two hour Broadway version will be trimmed to 90 minutes but since that’s what has happened to almost every other musical that has hit the Vegas stages you can pretty much take that one to the bank.

In case you’re wondering, the reason they do this is not only to cater to the short-attention span audiences of Vegas but to allow them to be able to do more than one show a night, which makes the productions more economically rewarding.

The production will play in the main theater at Palazzo, which will seat 1,600 people.

I Want My MTV – In Vegas
This year the MTV Video Music Awards will be held for the first time in Las Vegas, set for September 9, 2007 to be broadcast from The Pearl concert venue at
The Palms. Well, actually the bulk of the awards will be held in that new 2,500-seat theater but according to MTV and Palms spokespeople the entire resort will be utilized with live performances, interviews, and features from the pool area, the nightclubs, the fantasy suites, and more.

The awards will be the culmination of a series of events, specials, and concerts around the city during that week in September.

This will be the 24th edition of the awards show, which has previously played in New York, Miami, and Los Angeles. Remind me one day to tell you about when I worked for Madonna and somehow got put in charge of the entrance line at her post-concert bash and how I turned away a Backstreet Boy because he wasn’t on the list.

    New Hotel Planned for Downtown
The Union Park development adjacent to Fremont Street in Downtown Las Vegas is rapidly taking shape with the addition of a new hotel planned for a portion of the 61-acres. The city has entered into exclusive negotiations with a company that includes celebrity chef Charlie Palmer who has two restaurants in town – Aureole at
Mandalay Bay and his eponymous steakhouse at The Four Seasons.

The hotel, as currently envisioned, will have 400 rooms, two restaurants, and possibly some condominiums but it will not have a casino. It is estimated that it will cost about $100 million to build and if all goes well could be open for business by 2010.

This will be the second attempt from Palmer to do a hotel-condo project after a failed bid to build a similar resort on land just west of The Strip at Tropicana and Industrial.

Union Park is the name given to the mostly empty plot of land on the other side of The Plaza Hotel that is currently home to the Las Vegas Premium Outlets, the World Furniture Mart, and a government office building. It is envisioned as a live/work community that will feature a home for the Lou Ruvo Brain Institute (and its building designed by famed architect Frank Gehry), a performing arts center, a jewelry center similar to the Furniture Mart (which will expand dramatically), housing, office buildings, and a major hotel-casino.

Meanwhile in other Downtown news, the owners of Neonopolis appear to be falling out of Mayor Oscar Goodman’s graces, something you really don’t want to have happen considering the fact that he’s a former mob attorney. Despite repeated promises to rejuvenate the white elephant shopping center, including a proposed name change to Fremont Square, very little has actually happened and the Mayor and the City Council are running out patience. Watch for some major developments in the next couple of months.

    Direct the Next Vegas Commercial
Vegas.com and the CineVegas Film Festival have announced a contest to find the creative genius who will help create the next series of Vegas.com national television commercials. The winner will have the opportunity to direct a national TV spot and will also receive a cash prize of $5,000. The top five contestants will be flown to Las Vegas to attend the 2007 CineVegas Film Festival (June 6-16 at the Palms Hotel and Casino inside the Brenden Theatres), where a winner will be chosen by a special judging panel consisting of celebrities, CineVegas executives, and Vegas.com honchos.

To enter, potential Steven Spielbergs must create a 30- to 60-second video spot depicting their vision for the next Vegas.com commercial, remembering, perhaps that the whole “What happens in Vegas…” campaign belongs to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and probably won’t be appropriate. They must act it out in a one-man show or enlist the help of their friends.

Starting on May 4th, 2007, submissions may be uploaded to www.cinevegas.com/vegascom/. All submissions must be received no later than May 25th, 2007. The submissions will be reviewed and narrowed down to five finalists. The directors will be flown to Vegas for the 2007 CineVegas Festival and to be on-hand as a winner is chosen. The winner will receive $5,000 and the chance to direct a national commercial for Vegas.com.

Oh, and one more important note… while nudity may be a core competency of Sin City, it won’t get you a spot as a finalist here. Visit the website above for a list of official entry rules.

    Feature of the Week

Bette Midler to Replace Celine Dion
    Heading to Caesars

It’s official: the Diva has left the building; long live The Divine.

Bette Midler will be one of the headliners set to replace Celine Dion after her show at Caesars Palace ends this December. Midler’s shows will start in February of 2008 and will happen in four week stints throughout the year, totally up to around 100 shows.

Elton John will continue to perform at the Colosseum as well and there are still unconfirmed rumors that Cher may become the third spoke in this particular wheel.

Don’t bother – I’ve already made all the jokes.

The Divine Miss M’s show will run about 90 minutes with ticket prices ranging from $95 to $250. They are already on sale for next February and most of the really good seats for the first set of dates are already gone. Trust me, I looked. And yes, I already bought tickets but not, disappointingly, to opening night. I’m going the second night and will make it my mission to make friends with everyone at Caesars Palace between now and then to score tickets to the big first show.

Caesars Palace is the best hotel and casino in the entire galaxy.

If you’ve never seen Bette Midler in concert you really don’t know what you’ve been missing. Her shows are a tour de force of non-stop singing, dancing, and laugh-out-loud humor, often of the very bawdy variety. I’ve been lucky enough to see her about a dozen times over the years including her big millennium concert in Vegas just before the clock ran out on 1999.

The Caesars show will reportedly run about 90 minutes with a lot of the usual suspects in songs but the surrounding material will be all new. Even if that 90 minutes is shorter than what she usually does that’s more for Vegas audiences than for herself. I saw her just about a year ago and the woman, who will turn 62 before the Vegas begin, has more energy than I do and I’m twenty years younger.

Midler has signed a two-year deal with Caesars Palace and has an option for extending it beyond that.

It’ll also be interesting to see if there might be any surprise visits from her former band mate and frequent collaborator Barry Manilow who plays regularly at the Las Vegas Hilton just about a mile away.

Midler is a multiple Grammy winner who has had a string of hits since the early 1970s including “The Rose,” “Wind Beneath My Wings,” and “From a Distance” to name a couple of well-known titles. She has also head a successful film career with Oscar nominated turns in “The Rose” and “For the Boys” plus roles in huge hits like “Beaches,” “Down and Out in Beverly Hills,” and “The First Wives Club.”

Just for fun, I have posted my review of her 2004 “Kiss My Brass” tour on the Bette Midler page in the shows section on Vegas4Visitors.com.

    Question of the Week

    From: Carmen in Chicago, Illinois

Question: I just read that my favorite singer in the whole world, Jewel, is going to be opening the Springs Preserve in Las Vegas in June. What is that? Is it a new casino?

Answer: No Carmen, it’s actually the complete opposite.

The Springs Preserve will be a 180-acre national historic site commonly known as the “birthplace of Las Vegas.” Built atop and around the original Artesian springs that fed the Las Vegas Valley in its early days, the Preserve is located off Valley View Boulevard and borders Interstate 95, just north and west of The Strip.

Set to open in a couple of weeks, it will offer cultural, historical, educational, and recreational opportunities with museums, galleries, outdoor concerts and events, nature trails, a botanical garden, exhibits, and more including an 1,800-seat amphitheater that will host your favorite singer Jewel in the official opening ceremonies on June 9.

It will also be the home to the Nevada State Museum and Historical Society, which is still in the planning stages.

For more information about the Preserve, please visit www.springspreserve.org.

To purchase tickets for Jewel’s performance, call Ticketmaster at 702-474-4000 or visit www.ticketmaster.com. Tickets are priced at $45 for general admission (tax and fees not included).
