In addition to the casino, the Eastside Cannery Casino & Hotel will have various amenities that are sure to draw locals and tourists to the property. Artist's Concept
Bette Adds Shows
Bette Midler’s new show at Caesar Palace hasn’t even opened yet and it is apparently such a success that she adding five shows at the end of the first set of previously announced dates. Scheduled for March 11-16, the tickets are now on sale but going fast through Ticketmaster or by calling 877-BETTEM.

With plenty of girls and gags, The Showgirl Must Go On will feature some of Midler’s favorite colorful characters, from Delores Delago – the wheelchair-bound mermaid – to the oldest living showgirl in Las Vegas, old, old, old Soph. Midler and her entourage of talented performers, comprised of the staggering Harlettes (Jordan Ballard, Kyra Dacosta and Kamilah Martin), a 13 piece band— which includes a six piece horn section from the Las Vegas band “The Fat City Horns” — and 20 female dancers, are rehearsing in New York and Los Angeles before heading to Las Vegas to continue rehearsals in January 2008.

“I’m really looking forward to the show. I’ve been hoarding feathers and fans and sequins and rhinestones for the last 50 years and, hey, I’m ready to throw ‘em all on stage,” said Bette in a press release.

Dueling Men’s Magazine Clubs
The opening of
The Playboy Club at The Palms signaled a rebirth of the brand most notable for its bunny-tail clad cocktail servers and cool cache. But apparently it also signaled the rebirth of a war between the two biggest men’s magazines now that rival Penthouse is prepping an entry into the Vegas nightlife scene.

The difference between Playboy and Penthouse has always been fairly obvious, with the latter being the more, ahem, adult of the adult periodicals and the nightclub battle will fall along the same lines. The Playboy Club is an ultra-lounge with a boutique casino and while you’ll see a lot of skin it’ll be of the PG-13 variety with no actual nudity.

The Penthouse Club, on the other hand, will be a full-on strip club taking over the 46,000-square-foot space just west of The Strip near Mandalay Bay now known as Sin Gentleman’s Club. The building is getting a multi-million dollar makeover that will create four separate rooms of “entertainment” including a VIP lounge and one devoted exclusively to locals (RU702 refers to the area code). The club is open now during the transition but the grand opening will be January 11, 2008. For more information visit the website at www.penthouselv.com.

Gold Spike Makeover Expands
Awhile back I had an item in my column about the new owners of the decrepit Downtown hotel The Golden Spike and their grand plans to turn it into an upscale boutique resort. Now it seems as if the plans are getting even grander as a partnership has emerged between the Gold Spike’s owner and those of an even more rundown property next door.

If all goes according to the concept, the Travel Inn will get incorporated into the Gold Spike renovations, which will include a complete renovation of the 100 hotel rooms, a top to bottom remodel of the casino, and the addition of a restaurant, spa, and pool.

The multi-million dollar renovation is expected to get underway soon with a target opening date for the new hotel by the end of next year.

Feature of the Week

What’s New on the Center Strip
New Tower in Store

It’s easy to get distracted by all the new construction happening on The Strip. What with the $7 billion CityCenter rising dramatically near Bellagio, Wynn Las Vegas’s encore called Encore nearing its topping off, Palazzo ready to open this month, and more the existing hotel casinos seem to get overshadowed in terms of development and column inches.

But that doesn’t mean nothing is happening at the major resorts on The Strip. A couple of weeks ago I started this mini-series talking about goings-on at South Strip hotels and this week we continue with hotels on the Center Strip, which extends roughly from Harmon Avenue to Spring Mountain/Sands.

Planet Hollywood is the biggest news in this area, with big chunks of the renovation from the Aladdin complete. The casino, most of the front of the building, and some rooms have been remodeled and new restaurants and bars added. More is on the way with nightclubs, more eateries, a revised sports book, more room refreshing, and a hotel-condo tower under construction out back.

Next door at Paris and sister hotel Bally’s, things are pretty much status-quo for now although there are still rumors that big changes are store for both properties once the long-in-the-works buyout of Harrah’s Entertainment is finally finalized.

There’s nothing big happening at Bellagio in terms of construction but they continue to refine the product with a new nightclub due to open any day now and some rumored changes to their restaurant offerings.

Caesars is prepping to build yet another hotel tower, this one set to go in on the south side of the property along Flamingo Road. It will add nearly 1,000 rooms to the inventory. There’s also the big Bette Midler show set to open in February, replacing Celine Dion’s extravaganza, which ends it run on Dec ember 15th.

The Mirage is mostly done with its multi-million-dollar makeover that had made the property much more grown-up. Major changes have totally revamped the casino and public areas with a darker, sleeker look, rooms have been revised, restaurants and clubs have been added, and more is on the way including a burger joint set to go in where the White Tiger Habitat used to be near the south entrance.

Sister hotel Treasure Island is focusing primarily on restaurants and entertainment, with new venues set to open in 2008 including an upscale club to replace the popular Tangerine.

Barbary Coast completed its transition to Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall earlier this year although that mainly involved changing the signs.

The Flamingo and Harrah’s have had some room renovations (some of which have gotten the company in trouble for alleged code violations) but other than that those hotels are mostly unchanged. Like Paris and Bally’s, big things could be in store when the Harrah’s buyout is complete.

Ditto Imperial Palace, which all common wisdom said would be demolished by now. Instead the Harrah’s deal delayed the wrecking balls and the hotel is mostly the same as it always has been.

Major room makeovers are underway at The Venetian but the bulk of the money and energy is being devoted to the new Palazzo hotel next door set to open in a couple of weeks.

Question of the Week

From: Corinne in New Orleans, Louisiana

Question: We were in Las Vegas recently and noticed construction at the former Wet ‘n Wild site near The Sahara. What is being built there?

Answer: Well, right now nothing. The activity you saw at that site is actually support for Fontainebleau, the multi-billion dollar resort going in next door.

However, news this week cleared the way for yet another new resort to go on the Wet ‘n Wild site proper. Dubbed Crown Tower, the project was held up for awhile as the people behind it fought to build what they hoped would be the tallest building in the US – a 1,888 foot tall building that would’ve been about 70 stories taller than The Stratosphere.

The FAA had some issues with that idea thought, worried that planes coming into McCarran might have to, you know, steer around the place.

So they negotiated a 1,064 foot tall tower instead, which would make it the tallest hotel in the US. And before you go rushing to your computers, yes – The Stratosphere Tower is taller than that but it doesn’t have any hotel rooms inside.

In addition to the 5,000 or so rooms Crown would also have a 250,000-square-foot casino (making it the biggest in Vegas), showrooms, nightlife, restaurants, shopping, and more.

The owners are hoping to begin construction on the $5 billion resort next year with a phased opening starting in 2011.
