Strip Goes Dark for Earth Hour
No, they didn’t all forget to pay their electric bills. One might have wondered if that was the case when all of the lights went out on The Strip this past weekend.

Instead it was the city taking part in Earth Hour, the global event sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund that asked people to turn off their lights and any non-essential electrical devices as a symbolic nod toward energy conservation.

Every major hotel on The Strip shut down the bulk of their external lighting for an hour between 8:30 and 9:30 on Saturday. This included marquees, building lighting, and everything else that could be turned off without creating a hazard for tourists.

The famous “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign was also darkened for the hour.

Of course while people around the globe turned off their indoor lighting, the casinos decided to keep theirs on. Ditto for those little electronic devices known as slot machines. Hey, you can only take symbolism so far.

Okay, it wasn't this dark.
Break Out the Rhinestones
April 15th is widely reviled as being the day taxes are due, but there’s a reason to celebrate it, at least if you’re in Las Vegas on that day and you are a fan of rhinestones.

The Liberace Museum will celebrate its 30th Anniversary on April 15th with an all-day celebration of concerts, special exhibits, and (for the budget conscious) 30-cent admission from 9am to 9pm.

The evening will feature a VIP reception and show benefitting the museum and the Liberace Foundation.

MGM Mirage: The Soap Opera Continues
Strained relationships, public insults, looming disaster, a crisis narrowly averted. This week’s episode of “Desperate Housewives?” Nope, just another week in the ongoing saga of MGM Mirage.

Previously on “As the Slot Machine Turns,” the MGM Mirage corporation decided it would be a cool idea to spend somewhere in the neighborhood of $10 billion on a new hotel, casino, and entertainment complex called CityCenter. To help finance the deal, they took on a partner in Dubai World, the financial arm of the Middle Eastern nation.

Then that pesky global economic meltdown came along, debt started piling up, the credit they needed to pay for the place dried up, rumors of bankruptcy were rife, and generally speaking things kind of sucked. And that was all before this past week when things got really ugly.

Dubai World filed a lawsuit against MGM Mirage saying that they were in breach of the contract the two entities have. This came a few days before both companies had to make a $200 million debt payment or risk being forced into bankruptcy in both the CityCenter project and in general – a bankruptcy that could’ve forced the construction on the massive project to come to a halt, laying off 8,500 workers in the process. Dubai World said they weren’t going to make their part of the payment, MGM Mirage said their creditors wouldn’t let them make it all, and things headed for a dramatic showdown on Friday when the bill was due.

Then somebody blinked somewhere and MGM Mirage made the payment in full, without Dubai World’s help, and the crisis was averted. For now.

Tune in next week when Gabby and Carlos have a fight, Dave tries to kill Mike, and Edie has a shocking encounter with Orson. No, wait… that’s “Desperate Housewives.” I keep getting them confused.

Vegas4Visitors Weekly Awards
The Fond Farewell Award of the Week goes to The Comedy Stop at
The Tropicana, which was one of the few remaining stand-up comedy joints in town. It closed its doors earlier this month.

The Fonder Farewell Award of the Week goes to “Folies Bergere,” the showgirl classic which ended it’s nearly 50 year run at the Tropicana this past weekend.

The Fondest Farewell of the Week goes to Mary and Bob Basta, purveyors of the “Best. Chocolate. Ever.” at The Chocolate Swan, who decided to shut down the store at Mandalay Bay and take an early retirement for health reasons. I will dream of their chocolate covered caramels for years to come.

“Dancing with the Las Vegas Stars” Benefit
Master (Magician) Of Ceremonies

I don’t usually talk about one-time events in Las Vegas, mainly because odds are that most of the people reading my column won’t be there on the day of said event. But every now and then something comes along that is worthy of my (and your) attention.

Local Las Vegas celebrities will show their stuff at the Palms Casino Resort’s Rain nightclub on Sunday, April 19, during the fundraiser “Dancing with the Las Vegas Stars,” which supports five local charities that help Las Vegas residents fight cancer.

Hosted by The Caring Place and presented by Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada, the dance competition begins at 2 p.m. and will feature the following celebrities representing a specific charitable organization: City of Las Vegas Mayor Oscar B. Goodman for the American Cancer Society, World Champion boxer Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini for The Caring Place, KLUC Radio Personality Chet Buchanan for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Zowie Bowie singer Chris Phillips for the Candlelighter’s Childhood Cancer Foundation, and actor Brent Barrett for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Monte Carlo magician Lance Burton will serve as the master of ceremonies, while TV host Robin Leach, Channel 13 weatherman Brian Scofield, comedian Louie Anderson, female impersonator Frank Marino, and professional ballroom dancer Tony Delgado will roast the competitors. Tina Walsh from Phantom: The Las Vegas Spectacular and Travis Cloer from Jersey Boys will perform while the final votes are tallied. Mrs. Nevada Tiffany Comstock will also be on hand as the celebrity hostess.

Tickets are available through Ticketmaster for $50 plus applicable taxes and fees. The price includes appetizers and one drink. Attendees must be 21 years or older.

The public’s votes will decide the contest’s winner. Votes are $1 each with all proceeds benefiting each charity, and can be placed during the show or via the event’s Web site at DancingWithTheLasVegasStars.com.

Montagu Matters: Top 7 Sandwiches in Las Vegas
Thanks Earl

Back in 1762, the First Sea Lord of the British Navy, John Montagu, was kind of a busy guy. There was the navy thing, of course, but he was also a dedicated gambler who loved to while away an entire day playing cards. The problem he faced way back then was that you spend all day at a card table and you get hungry but things like, you know, mutton isn’t easy to eat while drawing to an inside straight. Anyway, so dear old John came up with the idea to put meat between two slices of bread and invented a thing that was named after one of his other titles – the Fourth Earl of Sandwich. In honor of the Earl, and just because I’m kind of hungry, I decided to make a list of the Top 7 Sandwiches in Las Vegas. This is just about the sandwich and not about anything else like price or the restaurant in which it is consumed. It’s tough to rank these so instead I am listing them in alphabetical order by restaurant.

Capriotti’s
There are so many amazing sandwiches at this local chain of Italian sub shops that it is impossible to pick just one, so two of the seven best sandwiches are coming from here. First and foremost is the Ham and Cheese, which may sound kind of boring but, wow, so not boring on their soft, freshly baked bread and loaded with all the fixings. The second is their classic Italian with Genoa salami, capacolla, and prosciutini. Bring on the oil and vinegar!

Dick’s Last Resort
Purists may howl but I’m going to go out on a sandwich limb here and include the ½ pound burgers at this Excalibur restaurant on my list. Add in your choice of toppings on a really good hunk of beef and you have the makings for a great sandwich (it’s meat between bread so get off my back).

Earl of Sandwich
Again, lots of choices here at this Planet Hollywood restaurant, but I’m going to go for the Earl’s Club, with finely roasted turkey, crisp bacon, and Swiss on their artisan baked bread.

Margaritaville
There is a lot to choose from on the eclectic menu at this Flamingo restaurant, but the Cuban Sandwich is done as traditional as you’re going to get this far north of Havana with roasted pork pressed into a hearty Cuban loaf.

Memphis Championship Barbecue
The good news is that you pretty much can’t go wrong with anything on the menu at Memphis Championship, but if you can tear yourself away from the ribs and other more traditional favorites, go for the Memphis Hot Links sandwich, a spicy, slow cooked, dream come true. Have water standing by.

Triple 7 Brew Pub
The Philly Cheese Sandwich is this Main Street Station restaurant’s version of the cheese steak, done up right with your choice of chicken or steak, sautéed onions, peppers, and Swiss cheese.
