Las Vegas News of the Week

How Low Can You Go? For Fontainebleau, Pretty Low
Last week in Michigan the Silverdome Stadium, a property that originally cost more than $55 million to build, was sold for just over half a million dollars, or about 1% of the original price tag.

This week in Las Vegas, a major gaming company is trying to buy a $3 billion hotel-casino for about 1% of that cost. Do I sense a trend?

Penn National Gaming has been trying to get the shuttered, half-constructed Fontainebleau out of bankruptcy, originally offering about 10% of the original build estimate or $300 million. Now they are offering $50 million, saying that the value of the property has fallen dramatically since construction came to a halt.

The property on the north end of The Strip was originally going to open in 2010 with nearly 4,000 hotel and condo units. The developers of the project declared bankruptcy after a consortium of banks pulled nearly $800 million in promised funding due to what they say were missed interest payments. It is estimated that it would take more than a billion dollars to finish the hotel, which Penn National says they have and would try to have done by the end of 2011.

Mobile Strippers Banned
County officials have modified a city ordinance to ensure that there are no more strippers in boxes on Las Vegas streets. There’s a sentence you probably wouldn’t find written about any other city in the world.

The whole thing started when a local strip club decided to mount a giant plexi-glass box on the back of a truck and put a dancer and a pole inside. It cruised The Strip causing no small amount of consternation from public officials and some of the general public also.

The strip club pulled the truck from the road over the outcry but just to make sure that no one else tries it, the county has revised an ordinance banning flashing lights and animation on mobile advertising to also ban flashing, um… well, anything that a live performer might flash.

Suspicious Package Shuts Down The Strip
I’ll give you the ending first: it turned out to be nothing serious.

But for awhile there was quite a bit of drama on The Strip last week after officials shut down the street and evacuated a casino due to a suspicious package left inside. The package was spotted in the Slots a Fun casino, next door to Circus Circus and prompted enough concern to bring out the bomb squad and literally stop traffic.

In the end, however, it was a false alarm and business quickly went back to normal.

Thanksgiving Special: Things in Vegas To Be Thankful For
I'll Never Forget It You Know...

A few years ago I did a list of things in Las Vegas worth being thankful for. After a very rough year in the city, I figured its time for an update of that list.

This December I’ll be unveiling the annual Vegas4Visitors.com Top 10 Awards, where I tell you my favorite hotels, restaurants, shows, and more. Those lists are for the big stuff and have no room for the tiny pleasures that often make a Vegas vacation shine. Here are my thoughts:

  1. Watching a dolphin play at the Mirage Dolphin Habitat.
  2. The smell inside the Bellagio Botanical Gardens.
  3. Sophie Tucker jokes during the Bette Midler show at Caesars Palace.
  4. Giant waffles with bacon baked inside at Hash House a Go Go.
  5. Getting a straight flush in Three-Card Poker.
  6. The Albert Einstein action figures at the Atomic Testing Museum.
  7. When they play Frank Sinatra’s “Luck Be a Lady” during the Bellagio Fountain shows.
  8. The segment in Mystere when the aerialists seem to fly above the audience.
  9. The fact that, no matter how fancy they get, they still have people dressed up like gladiators and Roman princesses at Caesars Palace.
  10. That someone thought of putting a stripper in a plexi-glass box on a truck.
  11. The interior design at Red Rock Resort that ensures there is no such thing as a plain wall.
  12. Eating the gravy smothered fried chicken at M&M Soul Food and not caring about cholesterol.
  13. The partnership between Bob Mackie and Cher.
  14. That you can now get a hotel room in Vegas without needing to sell a kidney to afford it.
  15. Showgirls wearing big headdresses.
  16. That even after they have de-Egypted the hotel, there are still a giant statues of Ramses guarding the entrance to the casino at Luxor.
  17. Hand pays.
  18. The margaritas at Tacos & Tequila.
  19. Anything bejeweled in the gift shop at the Liberace Museum.
  20. The climactic battle scene in KA.
  21. No matter how late you stay up there's always places to go and things to see.
  22. The fact that a place like The Cupcakery exists.
  23. The little old ladies in the casinos who sit next to you at the slot machines and congratulate you every time you hit even a moderate jackpot.
  24. Paying too much for room service and an in-room move you could get from the video store for a third of the price just because you’re feeling lazy and decadent and don’t want to get out of bed.
  25. Readers like you.
