| Bougainvillea Café: Full Review | ||||||||||||
|
Remember the days before all the outrageously priced restaurants came to town? You know, when you could get New York Steak and eggs for $5 or a T-bone dinner for $8? Never fear friends for those days are back at the Bougainvillea Café at Terrible's.
This charming little 24-hour coffee shop located on the second floor of the hotel offers such a wide variety of food at such low prices that I could spend the bulk of this review just talking about the menu. Menu items and prices change often but this is a fairly good representation of what you should expect when you arrive: Two pages worth of Chinese specialties including the "Chinese Lunch Specials" (Hong Kong Chowmein, Strawberry Chicken, Sweet & Sour Pork, and more) served with soup, egg rolls, fried rice, and fortune cookies for $6.89. A full breakfast menu (served 24 hours) including a "Build Your Own Omelette" section for $4.99, biscuits and gravy for $2.99, 12 oz Ham Steak and 4 eggs (any style) for $3.99, and the aforementioned NY Steak and eggs for $5. Steaks or prime rib and shrimp with a potato or rice and vegetable are going to run you $16.99. A full dinner menu has everything from pastas for around $5-7, fried chicken, fried shrimp, salmon fillets, BBQ ribs, and a whole rotisserie chicken for $10. Wait, there's more. Sandwiches and burgers are all under $8. "24 Hour Specials" include a 16-ounce T-bone, a 10-ounce prime rib, or a 14-ounce NY Steak plus potato or rice, vegetable, a cup of soup or salad, and a 12 oz draft beer for $8-12. Salads are all under $8. Soups and appetizers run from $1.69-$7. Desserts, including a banana split, deep dish apple pie, cheesecake, and more are all around $4 or less. And there's a full wine list. They also have rotating graveyard and daily specials that definitely qualify for the status of "Cheap Eats" that Vegas used to be famous for. Sufficed to say that no matter what kind of gastronomic mood you're in, you'll probably be able to find something here to satisfy it. And the even better news is that the food is good. I needed a light lunch so I ordered the $5 "Soup and Sandwich Express." I got half of a gigantic turkey sandwich and a big bowl of hearty chicken noodle soup, loaded with vegetables, thick egg noodles, and big chunks of chicken. It was perfect, filling, and incredibly cheap - a terrific alternative to paying all that money and eating way too much at a Strip buffet. I also tasted the Tequila Quesadilla, a flour tortilla stuffed with shredded Tequila chicken, jack cheese, guacamole, tomatoes, and sour cream. You'll find it under the appetizer section of the menu but it was gigantic and more than enough for a meal. This is the kind of place that makes you not feel so badly about all the money you've lost in the casino. You can go back to your friends and gloat that you found this terrific little café, got a ton of really good food, and paid next to nothing for it. They'll be so jealous.
