    Sunshine Cafe: Full Review

Hidden away in a decrepit strip mall behind a Chevron station, The Sunshine Café isn't going to win any awards for its décor. It's a bare bones, one-step-above hole-in-the-wall with vinyl booths, paneling on the walls, and a menu that creatively spells it "Chicken Cordon Blue."

And it's one of the best places I've eaten at in Las Vegas.

I had a ham and cheese omelet that puts other omelets to shame. The omelets at Denny's can only dream of being this good. In fact, I picture them, late at night sitting around the kitchen playing cards and smoking cigarettes saying things like "Man, if only I could be an omelet at the Sunshine Café." And all the other omelets nod and smile wistfully.

Okay, I'm going a little overboard here, but it was a really good omelet.

Breakfasts are their specialty with things like chicken fried steak, ham, bacon, eggs, pancakes, grits, hash browns, bagels, oatmeal, and the like taking up a big chunk of the menu. The rest is filled up with sandwiches (Philly cheese steak, club, French dip, tuna melt, etc.), burgers, a couple of simple salads, soups, desserts, and a few dinners (fried chicken, fish and chips, hamburger steak, etc.).

And, are you ready for this? The most expensive thing on the menu was the fresh pork or chicken cutlet dinner for a whopping $6.95. Most everything else was under $6.

That omelet I mentioned above can with three eggs, melted cheese, and thick chunks of homestyle ham, plus hash browns, and toast for about $5.

This is down home cooking in a friendly atmosphere - in fact I was the only person sitting at the little lunch counter that the waitresses didn't greet by name. Even so, I still got a big smile and a "how ya doin' hon?"

Of special note are the operating hours: Tuesday through Friday from 7am until 3pm and Saturday from 7am until 2pm. They are closed Sunday and Monday.

Skip the buffets. Forget Denny's. Leave the Egg McMuffin in its little paper wrapper. Drive immediately to the Sunshine Café and have a big, hearty breakfast for a tiny amount of money. You'll be glad you did.
