The Cannery is not a billion dollar palace on The Strip but it is still impressive in ways that have less to do with glitz and glamour and more to do with honest-to-gosh value. The overall design of the hotel and casino goes after that incredibly popular retro-vibe by romanticizing a 1940’s wartime industrial theme – think Rosie the Riveter with slot machines. As themes go it’s tastefully executed and fun. A 120-foot smokestack points the way from the 15 freeway and as you walk inside notice the playful details such as the can-shaped door handles, the brightly colored art renditions of ‘40s pinup style posters, and the unique slot machine carousel tops all with that Betty Grable ambience. The casino has all of the latest slots and video poker plus a few table games. Around the fringes of the room are several restaurants including Victory’s, a 24-hour coffee shop with service open to the adjacent “Booze and Bets” sports book; Casa Cocina Mexican lunches and dinners; Waverly Steakhouse, an inexpensive yet impressive looking upscale eatery; and the Cannery Row Buffet, a large cheerful room filled with various culinary food-stations. The primary entertainment venue, The Club, as it is known, is a giant “black box” of a room that can be reconfigured into a myriad of entertainment possibilities. Move the stage to one side, fly in a couple of collapsible walls, throw in some seating and you’ve got a traditional proscenium stage theater. Move the stage to the other side, add some tables, and open the big garage doors to the buffet and you’ve got an expanded dining area with entertainment. Set up the dance floor on a warm summer night and open the giant glass wall and you’ve got an indoor/outdoor club complete with a high-tech lighting and sound system. Or throw open that glass wall and set up some food booths and games in the adjoining outdoor courtyard and you’ve got a street fair, perfect for springtime festivals. Movie theaters feature all digital projection and sound so that could provide an amusing high-tech distraction if the slots aren't hitting. The 201 rooms are located in a three-story motel-style building adjacent to the main casino. They are motel-style basic with a bed or two, a table and chairs, and a cozy bathroom. Additional features include 27” televisions with cable and pay-per-view movies, dual line phones with dataports, hair dryers, and irons and boards. Some of the rooms overlook the aforementioned outdoor courtyard and will be sold with packages that include whatever event is taking place down there. Anything having to do with food will include delivery right to your room. Service, as you would expect if you’ve been to any of the locals joints, is very friendly – much more friendly than you’ll find on the sometimes snobbish Strip or even Downtown. Prices are on the inexpensive side. You’ll probably be able to get a room here during the week for about $60 and a touch over $100 on weekends depending on the season. The hotel’s proximity to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway probably means that race weekends will be sold out quickly and/or very expensive. This is not the type of hotel that most Vegas visitors will think about for their trips. It’s too far from most of what you want to do and doesn’t contain the kind of must-see attractions that draw people to town. But for inexpensive rooms and a unique entertainment venue I still give this one my nod of approval. If everything on The Strip is too expensive, consider this as an alternative. |

From the Vegas4Visitors Weekly Column 11/27/06 The Cannery is one of the few casino-hotel options on the north side of town worth really talking about and a new addition has enhanced the appeal of the place. There’s a huge new parking garage that leads to a major casino expansion for plenty of slots, mostly of the nickel, penny, and quarter variety. Take the hallway toward the big new movie theater complex and you’ll find several new restaurants, a revised race and sports book, a new bingo room, and a new poker room.
From the Vegas4Visitors Weekly Column 9/18/06 Cannery Makes Two Big Moves The Cannery is making two big plays for Las Vegas: the announcement of the completion of a $45 million expansion of its North Las Vegas location and plans to develop a second Cannery on Boulder Highway. The grand opening of the NLV Cannery expansion will be held on October 3rd and will feature cake, champagne, pizza, popcorn, and t-shirts for folks who show up to take a look at the new offerings which include a five-story parking garage, additional casino space, movie theaters, a race and sports book, and poker room, a bingo room, and new dining outlets. Meanwhile a second Cannery is being planned for Boulder Highway on the land currently occupied by the Nevada Palace (just south of Sam’s Town between Tropicana and Flamingo). That casino will stay open while they build the new Cannery around it and when complete it will feature more than 300 rooms and a casino big enough to hold 2,000 slot machines. Construction is expected to begin in January with an opening in late 2008. From the Vegas4Visitors Weekly Column 6/19/06 Cannery Expansion Continues The North Las Vegas locals’ favorite The Cannery is continuing its major expansion with the announcement of the opening of a new race and sports book and a new poker room. The sports book has a theme consistent with the casino including murals depicting the 1940’s era and the Cannery’s famous pin-up girls surrounding 129 seats with individual 15-inch computer screen and earphones at each lighted player station. The sports viewing area boasts state-of-the-art electronic boards easily viewed at the front and back of the room. A 60-inch center screen will be utilized for the featured races each day. The room also includes ten, 50-inch LCD television screens and eight wagering windows. The poker room offers 14 tables including low- and medium-limit Texas Hold’em, Omaha and 7- Card Stud. The casino will continue to host daily Texas Hold-Em tournaments at 10 a.m., as well as its monthly “Free-roll” Tournament, among other promotions. This is all part of a $45 million expansion that has so far added a parking garage, more casino space, and movie theaters and will add new restaurants and a bingo room. The Cannery is a friendly place that you really should take the time to visit, if for no other reason than the last two Megabucks slot machine jackpots were won here. Third time is a charm?
From the Vegas4Visitors Weekly Column 4/3/06 Movie Theaters Go Big in Vegas Two new movie theater complexes in Las Vegas are upping the ante for anyone who wants to catch a flick while in Sin City. The new Red Rock Resort opened this week with a 16-screen facility from Regal Cinemas that all feature digital sound and stadium seating with plush rocking chairs to accompany its decidedly upscale décor (which was done in partnership between the movie chain and the resort to ensure it meshed with the overall scheme). There are also several VIP booths with reclining lounge chairs, their own restroom, and catering service in case you feel like blowing some of your craps winnings on a luxury viewing of “Mission Impossible 3.” Meanwhile over at The Cannery, a locals’ hotel on the north side of town, the Galaxy Theaters will be opening a 14-screen complex on May 5, 2006 that will be the largest all-digital facility west of the Mississippi. Instead of the traditional reels of film, the screens will show images from a digital projector, which promises better color, clarity, and detail (sort of like how DVD is better than video tape). This is the wave of the future as it also gives the exhibitors the ability to rapidly switch out films in their theaters, adding an extra showing of “Stick It” for gymnastics crazed audiences.
