Vegas4Visitors Museum: Caesars Palace

Caesars Palace opened in 1966 and was at that time one of the most expensive hotels ever built - at a cost of about $10 million. The hotel is still in business in the same location and in 2005 opened it's latest expansion - a 700 room hotel tower estimated to have cost nearly $1 billion to build.

    1967 Commemorative Coin
Caesars Palace opened in August of 1966 and to help promote the hotel to a meeting of convention planners, this special sterling silver coin was minted for the holiday season that year. On the cardboard placard is a note from the hotel’s general manager at the time, Charlie Monahan. It reads:

"As a Convention Planner you are something SPECIAL to us…. so.. at this SPECIAL time of the year, we want you to remember CAESARS PALACE with this SPECIAL commemorative coin. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!"

The face of the coin shows the grand sign that fronted The Strip with an imprint around the edge reading "Acceptable only at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas."

The back of the coin reads "Five dollar gaming token for use by player only – 1967." The inside of the coin has an imprint of a Roman goddess feeding grapes to a lounging Caesar-esque figure.

    70s Sinatra Showguide
This gorgeous Caesars Palace show guide was donated by Linda Keele of Toronto, Ontario.

The red velvet cover features a simple word – "Sinatra" – and the Caesars Palace logo from the era. Inside are brief biographies of Frank Sinatra and some of the other artists scheduled to appear in the summer of the year this was published, including Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie.

Sinatra’s biography reads in part, "The public knows him best as the singing star who almost alone raised popular music to new critical respectability, couple with the flamboyant personality of one of the most charismatic stars in the world."

Ella Fitzgerald’s brief bio has a quote from one of the greatest jazz vocalists of the 20th Century: "The reason I continue to sing… I love people and I love to be loved by people. When you get that two-way love going, that’s something."

The back page features upcoming shows by Phyllis McGuire, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, and Harry Belafonte.

Many thanks to Linda for donating this piece.

    60s Postcard - Evel Kneival
This photo postcard was part of a series issued by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

Here’s a stunning shot of daredevil Evel Kneival making his historic leap across the Caesars Palace Fountains in 1967. The jump ended badly and Evel wound up in the hospital for more than a month.

    60s Postcard - Color 3-Shot
When Caesars Palace opened in 1966, it set the standard for what would become Las Vegas excess. With its wild Roman decadence theme, statuary, fountains, and gilt-edged everything, Caesars was without a doubt the most luxurious hotel in Vegas and perhaps the world.

This postcard, although not dated, is probably from the late 1960s. It shows three shots of the hotel – the front, the pool area in back, and the Circus Maximum showroom stage.

The back of the postcard reads: "This 700-room multi-million dollar luxury hotel in the Las Vegas Strip will long be remembered for its spectacular 1966 opening. The statuary collection was especially sculptured in Carrara, Italy, by Europe’s foremost masters."
