This was actually the second El Rancho on the Las Vegas Strip and the two were completely unrelated. The first opened in 1941 and burned down in 1960. This El Rancho, located on the north end of The Strip across from Circus-Circus, was opened in 1982 when the owners of The Silverbird (which opened in 1948 as The Thunderbird) remodeled and rethemed the resort. It struggled financially for many years and closed in 1987. It sat vacant for more than a decade and was torn down in 2001. The Fontainebleau hotel and casino was being constructed on the land once occupied by El Rancho but that project has run into financial difficulties and is currently on hold.
