50s Postcard - Frontier Village
Shortly after the hotel opened in 1941, the Last Frontier Village opened next door. The exact location of the attraction is unclear – some history puts it on the north side where there is now a parking lot and some puts it on the south side, approximately where the Fashion Show Mall is now located. Regardless, it was right next to the Last Frontier hotel on one side or another.
The village was Las Vegas’ first attempt at a “theme park,” featuring, western exhibits, old train cars and other vehicles, a museum and saloon, a playhouse, shops, amusements and small rides, and more all housed in original buildings from the 1800s.
Two interesting features of the Last Frontier Village included the original Silver Slipper Casino (pictured) and the original Little Church of the West.
The village was torn down in the mid 1950s and both the Silver Slipper and the Little Church of the West relocated to the other side of the street, which is where most people who have been going to Vegas for awhile remember them being. The Silver Slipper closed in 1988 and was torn down shortly thereafter. The Little Church of the West moved several more times and finally to its current location south of Mandalay Bay in the 1990s.
