The MGM Grand opened in 1973 as the largest and most expensive hotel in the world. It set a new standard for opulence and luxury that surpassed neighbors such as The Dunes, Flamingo, and Caesars Palace. With a 26-story tower, more than 2,000 rooms, and a casino longer than a football field, the MGM Grand was a revolution for Las Vegas. On November 21, 1980 a small electrical fire broke out and wound up killing more than 80 people. You can read more about the fire in the exclusive excerpt from the Moon Handbooks Las Vegas. After reopening in 1981, it retained the MGM Grand name until 1986 when it became Bally Grand and later Bally’s, the name the hotel operates under today.
