Vegas4Visitors Museum: Sahara

The Sahara opened in 1952 in the heart of the burgeoning Strip (the El Rancho, The Thunderbird, the Desert Inn, and the Frontier were all within walking distance). It originally had only 240 rooms but has grown over the years to have more than 2,000 today and anchors the north end of The Strip.

    60s Conga Room Menu
The Congo Room at The Sahara was a legendary showroom/restaurant that featured some of the biggest names in entertainment throughout the years. Marlene Dietrich, Liberace, Abbott & Costello, George Burns, Buddy Hackett, and Liza Minelli are just a few of the names that graced the stage here.

This menu probably dates to around 1964 when a major remodeling added several new restaurants. On the menu page, which is stapled into the exterior, it reads: "During construction of the new Coffee Shop, Intimate Steak House, and Far Eastern Restaurant, we unfortunately are limited in our present service and kitchen facilities. Logically, limited space means limited menu. But we will continue our high quality of food and our special concern to its preparation. Thank you. The Management."

That limited menu included broiled northern halibut steak, roast prime ribs of beef au jus, and broiled New York cut sirloin steak as entrees for around $6-7, plus desserts, choice of soup or salad, and appetizers.

A full wine list ranges from $3 red and white table wines up to $15 imported champagnes.

The back of the menu features a sketch of The Sahara showing the "skyscraper" tower that was built in the late 50s.

    60s Wine List
This fun item from the Sahara probably dates to the early to mid 1960’s. On the cover is the famous Sahara "girl," used in much of their promotional and advertising elements from that time period.

The wine list was probably used throughout the hotel at the various restaurants, bars, and the Congo Showroom. At the bottom of the first page is a note that reads "all prices subject to entertainment tax in Congo Room."

Red table wines, white table wines, appetizer wines, rose wines, champagnes, and sparkling burgundies are all featured. Some highlights: a bottle of Almaden Cabernet Sauvignon for $3.50, a bottle of Lancer’s Crackling Rose for $8.00, and a bottle of Mumm’s Extra Dry champagne for $13.00. A bottle of the latter will cost you about $50.00 at the Sahara today through room service.

    50s Postcard - Exterior
The Sahara in its glam days, probably taken shortly after it opened in 1952. The back of the card reads "Your Shangri-La is a resort-hotel designed to capture your every sense with delightful ingredients for a memorable vacation."

And take a look at that beauty in front - yep, that's a 1953 Cadillac Convertible. Oh, and there's a pretty girl getting out of it.
