Vegas4Visitors Museum: Tropicana

The Tropicana opened in 1957 at the far south end of the Las Vegas Strip, which was at the time one of the few outposts in the area (along with The Hacienda, which had opened the year before). Its colorful stained glass décor and upscale amenities earned it the nickname “The Tiffany of The Strip.” The hotel is still in business as of early 2006 but is rumored to be nearing a date with the wrecking ball, perhaps before the end of the year.

    Slot Machine Glass
Although not in the best of shape, this slot machine glass shows the iconic Tropicana logo design from the 1970s and 1980s. It is most likely from the Las Vegas casino but may be from the Atlantic City casino of the same name.

    50s Postcard
What is most interesting, at least to me, is what this postcard doesn't show - which is pretty much any of the hotel. Note that it is mostly sky with a shot of the Porte Cochere, the "flower" sculpture that sat out front and... well, that's it.

The back of the postcard reads "This new multi-million dollar hotel on the Las Vegas Strip was designed and built to top all of the fabulous hotels that have made this city famous. A stroll through the plush corridors, beautiful casino and semi-tropical gardens is an experience long to be remembered.
