The space currently known as The Crown Theater at The Rio has had many incarnations as both a nightclub and entertainment space. For a long time it was Club Rio, one of the most obnoxious clubs in town for its high prices, long lines, almost draconian dress code, and snotty attitude. Then it was a theater that had a series of shows (anyone remember the topless rock and roll show? I wish I didn't). For awhile it was home to Prince and his period concerts and also his 3121 nightclub.
Now it's known as The Crown and it comes with a heritage of sorts in that its operators once managed the famed Viper Room on The Sunset Strip. They are trying to bring that same indie/rock and roll aesthetic to the Crown in Vegas and they are doing a pretty good job of it.
The space is pretty cool. It's a big circle, basically, with a stage, a huge dance floor, and rings of booths and tables around it. The latter are usually for bottle service only but if they aren't all reserved, they will open them up so regular Joe's who don't want to pay $1,000 to sit down can use them. Very egalitarian of them.
They often have concerts, shows, and special events during the week and then straight-up dance clubs Friday through Sunday. The crowd is a mix of ages and demographics, but feels a little less stand and pose than some of the major clubs on The Strip. The same goes for the cover and drink prices, which are high but not outrageously so.
I wouldn't necessarily make this a destination nightclub - a place you'd go out of your way to visit. There are simply too many of them in town and this one isn't offering up anything remarkable or special to lure you in. Having said that, if you're in the neighborhood and are looking for a fun place to go party, this is a good bet.
