The Garage is not the kind of bar that most Las Vegas visitors will go out of their way to find. It is, after all, out of the way. Located a couple of miles east of The Strip, it is mostly frequented by locals and is pretty much just a simple, friendly, neighborhood bar. And that, right there, is the primary reason why you may want to go out of your way to find it.
The gay bars close to The Strip like Krave, Piranha, and Gipsy are often populated with tourists on the prowl. Not that there's anything wrong with that, especially if you are a tourist on the prowl, but sometimes what you want out of a gay bar is a low-pressure drink or a cheap pitcher, a game of pool or darts, and maybe some friendly conversation with someone who knows more about Las Vegas than the guy from Pittsburgh that you'll meet at the tourist heavy bars.
The place has a garage theme (hence the name) with hub caps and gas station style signs on the walls and the employees in mechanic shirts. There are a few comfy booths, lots of stools around the big bar, a couple of pool tables, darts, a jukebox, and video poker machines in case you can't stand being away from gambling options for very long.
The crowd varies from night to night but is mostly a jeans and t-shirt kind of crowd of all ages. Various special events include beer and liquor busts, pizza nights, and specials for local students from the nearby University of Nevada Las Vegas. The latter is Thursday night in case you, like me, are over 40 and don't want to feel like a perv.
I often encourage Vegas visitors to get off The Strip so they can experience places in Las Vegas that are a little more real. Places like The Garage are why.
