McCarran International Airport
Las Vegas is served by McCarran International Airport - a clean, comfortable, and modern facility with plenty of slot machines just in case you can't wait to get to your hotel to begin gambling.

Location
McCarran Airport is located very close to The Strip, less than half a mile from hotels like the MGM Grand and Mandalay Bay. It is accessible via Tropicana Blvd. at Paradise Road or via the Interstate 215 Bypass.

Terminals & Gates
There are two terminals at McCarran. The main terminal is primarily for domestic flights has four sets of gates marked A, B, C, and D. The A and B gates are connected by a very long hallway and moving walkways to the baggage claim and ticketing area. The C gates are connected by a similar hallway and an automated tram. Hint -- if your gate is C24 through C27 skip the tram and take the hallway - it's shorter. The D gates are connected by an automated tram.

The baggage claim, ticketing, and some other services including remote hotel check-in desks are concentrated in the center of the main terminal. Slot machines, video poker machines, stores, and restaurants are scattered throughout the terminal and gate areas.

Terminal 2 is for International flights, some domestic flights, and air charter. It has several gates, customs facilities, and services as well as shuttles to the main terminal.

Transportation
There are taxi lines just outside the baggage claim areas. This is also where you'll find the various shuttle buses that can deliver you to your hotel for a charge. Very few hotels run free shuttles.

The airport also has a full rental car facility with all of the major companies represented.

  • Other Monorails & Trams
    Mandalay Bay to Excalibur
This sleek newer runs from the corner of The Strip and Tropicana next to Excalibur south to Mandalay Bay and then back again with a stop at Luxor along the way. Note that the southbound route does NOT have a stop at Luxor. It's free and runs about every 10 minutes from early in the morning until late at night.

    Mirage to Treasure Island
Adjacent to the main entrance of The Mirage you'll find a tram that will deliver you to the rear of Treasure Island. Even though the hotels are right next to each other, this will probably save you time. The tram is free and runs about every five minutes during the day and evening.

    Car Rentals
If there is one bit of advice you should trust us on, it is our recommendation to get a rental car. They are relatively inexpensive (cheaper than cab rides all over town), offer you more freedom and choices, and are easy to park since all the major hotels offer free valet and self parking. The major companies that service Las Vegas McCarran airport are listed below with toll-free numbers and web-sites where applicable.

Previously, most of the car rental agencies operated counters inside the terminal and their own buses to lots that were within the airport property. So, renting from Avis? Go to the Avis counter by baggage claim, go outside and look for the Avis bus, and go to a nearby lot for your vehicle.

Now, a new $170 million consolidated facility is open south of the airport and the method by which you rent a car is drastically different.

The counters inside the terminal are gone and now instead of individual company buses, there is one bus for all of the car companies. Well, there are lots of buses, but they are all marked “McCarran Rent-A-Car Center” instead of branded with the corporate logos. Buses leave the main terminals roughly every five minutes so waiting won’t be a problem.

Hop on the bus and it’ll take you off of airport property to the new facility on Gilespie Street, near the intersection of Warm Springs and Las Vegas Boulevard South, which for the familiar is where the Las Vegas Outlet Mall is located.

The new facility has counters for Avis, Advantage, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, Dollar, Alamo, National, Payless, Savmor, and Thrifty car rental agencies and most of the vehicles will be housed in multi-story parking garages, thereby making the prospect of hopping in that Ford Taurus a little less intimidating than it was when it was sitting in the middle of a hot July parking lot.

For more information on the new system, visit McCarran.com and click on the Ground Transportation link.

    Taxis
Taxis in Las Vegas are about as common as slot machines - you'll always be able to find them near the entrances of the hotels, at the airport, and cruising the tourist areas of town. The price for all cab companies is the same: $3.20 to get in (unless you are getting in at McCarran Airport, where there is an additional $1.20 surcharge) and then $2.00 per mile ($.25 per 1/8 mile). If the taximeter senses that the taxicab is moving less than 8-12 MPH, the taximeter will assess a charge of $.20 (twenty cents) every 33 seconds ($22.00 per hour waiting time).

Prices are good for up to 5 people in the cab. Be sure that the prices are posted before you let the cab move!

Just on the off chance you need to call ahead, here are the major companies and their phone numbers.

    Shuttles & Limos
Several companies offer shuttles from the airport to all the hotels and back again. You don't need to make a reservation in advance - just go outside from where you pick up your luggage and you'll see them cruising the driveway. Below are the major companies and the prices they charge. Please note that these prices are per person and change often so make sure the prices are posted clearly on the side of the bus before you get on board.

Many of these companies also offer limousine service ranging in price from $25 for a sedan to a Strip hotel on up. Those must be arranged in advance.

    Buses & Trolleys
    City Buses
The city buses in this town are notoriously overcrowded and late. However, if you are on a strict budget and can't afford taxis or a rental car this is your only true alternative at this point as there are no other mass transit systems currently in place.

The primary bus you will be dealing with is called The Deuce, a double-decker that trolls The Strip and Downtown constantly. It's nicer than a normal bus and they do a better job of keeping up with things than they used to but they still have to sit in the mind numbing traffic on Las Vegas Boulevard and are often very crowded. The cost is $2.00 one way or $5.00 for an all-day pass with as many on-and-offs as you want.

    City Bus Fares

  • All routes are $1.25 per ride except for the one that cruises The Strip, which is $2.00 one way or $5.00 for an all day pass.
  • Senior citizens (62+) are 60 cents except for The Strip route, which is $1.00
  • Children 6-17 are 60 cents except for The Strip route, which is $1.00.
  • Persons with disabilities/medicare are 60 cents except for The Strip route, which is $1.00.
  • Children 5 and under ride free with an adult.

You can also buy passes online and have them mailed to you ahead of time. For more information visit the Citizen's Area Transit website.

    Vegas.com Arrow Shuttle
The Arrow, for those who are not aware, is the latest innovation from the behemoth Sin City website Vegas.com. Buses and trolleys (which are really just buses that look like trolleys) will be trolling the tourist areas in three separate routes – a Strip loop that runs from Mandalay Bay up to Wynn Las Vegas; a North Strip/Downtown loop that covers the area from just north of Wynn all the way up to Fremont Street and over to the convention center area (including the Las Vegas Hilton); and then a third covering the far south end of Las Vegas Boulevard including the South Point hotel and the big outlet mall among others.

Each bus is outfitted with touch-screen kiosks that will broadcast Vegas information and allow you to buy show tickets, nightclub passes, and more.

The cost is a seemingly steep $10 per person but that is good all day and includes an all-day pass for the Las Vegas monorail as well. While not as cheap as the city’s Deuce buses, it is significantly cheaper than what it’ll cost for you to take cabs everywhere and easier than walking.

For more information or to purchase passes, visit Vegas.com.
