| George Wallace: Review | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Stand-up comedian Wallace took the stage at The Flamingo in 2004 for what was supposed to be a 30 day run. Almost seven years later he's still going strong, drawing in a diverse audience to his regular 10pm shows.
Wallace's comedy style is conversational, relaxed, and seemingly without much of a plan. He pretty much starts chatting with the audience the moment he takes the stage and goes from there, winding his way through whatever humorous highways and byways he manages to find himself on. After doing standup for as long as he has, there are a lot of them so don't be surprised if he starts chatting with you and finds some sort of a joke for where you live, what you do, or how you look. For instance on the night I attended there was a pastor in the audience. Wallace asked him to stand up and then praised him for his service to his community, engendering a round of applause from the audience. He then asked the pastor to stay standing while he told a few non-threatening jokes about his own church experiences. Then he told the pastor to keep standing so he would know what it felt like to be in the congregation for a change. Poor guy was on his feet for a solid 20 minutes. It's all mostly genial and apolitical and only at times PG-13 rated at its most scandalous. The 10pm show time and the topics mean it isn't good for families, but only the most uptight of people would be offended by his humor and they probably won't be coming to see him anyway. The bulk of the act is committed to the things that alternately amuse or frustrate him about the world around him. He has a long list of people whose butts he'd like to kick - you'll find yourself agreeing with a lot of them. Wallace's rambling delivery and scattershot approach can probably be very exciting when all cylinders are firing, but it can also result in a lack of focus and a healthy dose of comic misses to go with the hits. I laughed when I saw him but not as much as I hoped too. Add in a show that ran for nearly two hours and I was ready for it to be over. Good standup veterans of the craft are hard to find in Las Vegas - Rita Rudner and Louie Anderson are two fine examples. Wallace is in good company with those two as are they with him.
